DUO Restaurant & Lounge, Southfield
By Ebony Nicole
The newest restaurant to hit Southfield will surely be pleasing to the eyes and taste. I was able to attend the grand opening of DUO, located on Northwestern and 12 Mile, and I was definitely impressed. DUO is an upscale and modern restaurant and lounge serving up an eclectic menu and a good time.
Upon entering, you can't help but notice the atmosphere. The dramatic interior sets the tone. In the bar area dark lighting and music give it an intimate laid-back feel. Enjoy one of their impressive hand-crafted martinis or cocktails from their original drink list.
Set off the bar is the elevated and spacious lounge area adorned with couches and pillows for seating, allowing guests to drink or dine in comfort. Warm colors, dark table tops and soft lighting creates the perfect backdrop to the bar and dining area, giving the space a luxurious feel.
A few steps down from the lounge and you enter the dining area. Cozy booth seating and tables are available and spaced appropriately, allowing guests to have an intimate dinner experience.
In this modern setting, mirroring the top lounges and restaurants in bigger cities like Manhattan or Los Angeles, the food has to be top-notch as well, and the food menu here matches the setting. Both owners have a background in culinary arts and it was very important to them to have a menu featuring diverse selections at a reasonable price point.
Appetizers are served in generous portions. When my friends and I dined, we tried the Tenderloin Steak Bites and Calamari, both of which were extremely good, and there was more than enough to share. Our wonderful hostess, Brittanie, was eager to recommend other starters including the Yum Yum Shrimp, Eggplant Involvtini, and the Seared Ahi Tuna Carpaccio.
Entrees include traditional items such as Lemon Chicken, Grilled Atlantic Salmon, and an 8 oz Filet Mignon. However, DUO also has other unique items including their Three Chili Rubbed Flat Iron Steak, Pan Seared Cherry Chicken, and a Vegetable Napoleon Parmesan which features breaded eggplant, summer squash and pasta marinara. Feeling casual? DUO also has a full list of sandwiches and burgers to please your appetite as well.
To accompany the entrees, DUO has a list of tasty side items such as Mac n Cheese, Whipped Potatoes, Roasted Red Skins, Fries, and more.
After dinner at DUO, you want to save room for dessert. At the opening we were able to sample a little bit of everything from their Creme Brule to the Flourless Chocolate Torte made with dark chocolate, ganache, and raspberry coulis. If that isn't enough to make your mouth water, they also serve up a classic New York style cheesecake topped with Fresh strawberries, and an Ice Cream Pie made with Vanilla, Chocolate, Carmel swirl and an Oreo Crust.
Open Monday through Saturday from 5:00-2:00 am., DUO is the perfect late night dining destination. On weekends the lounge transforms into an upbeat nightlife experience featuring a D.J. and a diverse crowd. DUO Restaurant & Lounge also offers a private dining room which can be used for a large party or social event. Whether you are in the mood for a memorable dining experience in a stellar atmosphere or a night on the town DUO is a great new destination.

Treats: Kathryn Johann, Morada Blue Swimwear
Kathryn Johann, Morada Blue Swimwear
By Ebony Nicole
On a hot summer day there is no better way to cool off than to throw on a swimsuit and find the nearest body of water. This week we were able to have a word with Kathryn Johann of Grosse Pointe Farms, owner of the online site Morada Blue Swimwear
Kathryn Johann lived in Ridgewood, New Jersey, a beautiful suburb of Manhattan, for most of her life and grew up being exposed to the incredible culture and fashion that New York City has to offer. She also had the opportunity to study abroad in Florence, Italy while majoring in art at Lafayette College, which allowed her to study photography and fashion design in one of the most beautiful cities in the world.
After moving to Manhattan after graduation, where many of her friends worked in the fashion industry, she was invited to fashion shows during fashion week." I was so inspired by the talented designers that I dreamed of someday starting my own company where I would be able to be creative and do what I love."
In 2005, her sister Nancy married Sean Cotton in Islamorada, Florida and she fell in love with the clear blue ocean and laid back Keys lifestyle. It was here in this picturesque setting that the idea for Morada Blue was born. "I became obsessed with finding the perfect bikini and realized there were some flaws in fit, support and quality in the suits that were available. I set out to find thicker fabric, stronger elastics and perfectly molded bra cups and designed swimsuits that create a more flattering fit to make women feel confident and beautiful."
It wasn't long before Morada Blue Swimwear made its premiere at the Miami Swim Show and then launched the online store www.moradablue.com in 2010. Kathryn says the biggest obstacle that she faced when starting the company was finding a really good factory in the USA that could produce the superior quality that she was looking for. During a time when she needed the most help, a friend reached out and told her to contact his father who had been in the swimwear industry for years. Kathryn toured his factory in New Jersey and it just so happened that they also created incredible swimsuits for Lisa Curran, Letarte and Badgley Mischka. Kathryn found her factory and she is pleased to say, "Now I have an extremely talented team that is very committed in their attention to detail and in creating swimsuits that I am very proud of."
All Morada Blue bikinis combine hi-fashion style with superb quality. Bikinis are sold as separates to create a custom fit and the bikini tops are totally adjustable to provide more support. The bottoms are cut on the Brazilian curve to make your butt look better and legs appear longer. All swimsuits are made in the USA of the best materials available and the fabric is twice as thick to provide a more flattering fit that helps suck in all the right spots.
Kathryn's goal when designing her swimsuits is to help women feel better about themselves and find a swimsuit that makes them feel confident and happy. Kathryn feels, "Everyone should feel their best when most exposed at the beach or pool!"
Morada Blue Swimwear is sold online at www.moradablue.com and from Kathryn's showroom in her Grosse Pointe Farms home where she hosts trunk shows and has private fittings. The line is also sold at La Jolie Rose in Grosse Pointe and Bridget & Stacie in Birmingham. Morada Blue Swimwear will be presenting their new line this fall in Detroit's Fashion Week and hope this will help them get more orders for boutiques and great feedback from buyers. Kathryn is on the right track and with her one-of-a-kind pieces. "My dream would be to have Morada Blue Swimwear sold in a major department store and I hope to continue to expand my brand throughout the country."

Michael McDaniel, Comedian
By Ebony Nicole
In life sometimes it's all about the journey -- that's where the real magic happens. For comedian, Michael McDaniel, although comedy appears to be his final destination, he has quite the story to tell about how he ended up on the stage with his stand-up routines filled with clever impersonations of controversial targets.
Growing up in Southwest Detroit, Michael was your typical kid, and although he had a natural sense of humor, this talent wasn't cultivated until high school. Like many of us in the mid-90's, Michael was a huge fan of the Martin Lawrence show and his parodies of different characters. Who could forget Shananay? Michael then began trying his own hand at impersonations by participating in local talent shows. With encouragement from his peers, who would beg Michael to impersonate some of their favorite celebs, Michael gained confidence and came to the realization that he had talent.
Michael has worn many different hats including a brief stint at Eastern Michigan University, real estate investments, selling time shares, and even working as a Sheriff Deputy in Hamtramck, yes, a sheriff deputy. No matter what he was doing, Michael was constantly being encouraged to take the "comedy thing" seriously. It was a former colleague who gave him his first shot at the stage, connecting him with a local comedy club.
Like many comedians, the generally hilarious Michael bombed his first time doing stand-up. This did not slow him down. Instead, he turned his time and energy to YouTube, creating mini films of him doing sketch comedy, impersonating celebrities such as Bill Clinton, Louis Farrakhan, and Charlie Murphy. Obviously, not being shy of controversy has its advantages. Michael thrived on YouTube and it also gave him a chance to practice his chops, develop a fan base and connect his material with people all over the globe.
A big moment for Michael came when he went to Chicago to audition in front of a live audience for Bill Belamy's "Who Got Jokes" Although he was unprepared for the stage, Michael shined, mixing improv with impersonations. This enabled him tomake great connections. Shortly after that, a chance meeting with the owner of a comedy club allowed him to showcase his talent.
It wasn't long before the once-sheriff and businessman was booking at some of the area's largest comedy showcases, including Mark Ridley's Comedy Castle in Royal Oak, where he soon became a regular. Being fairly new to the business, Michael made it a point to do things his way, taking risks and promoting himself the best way he knew how. This "can do" attitude is what helped him break through the local comic game and opened up opportunities for him nationwide. "If you can make it in Detroit you can make it anywhere. When they love you here they really love you", says McDaniel.
Michael recently released his first full-length stand-up DVD, which was filmed at the Charles Wright Museum of African American History. Michael recalls everything going completely wrong on that day, but the final product is one he is extremely proud of. It appears that Michael has a knack for turning tragedy into triumph.

Bingo Pet Salon
Bingo Pet Salon, Royal Oak
By Ebony Nicole
As a pet lover, I truly believe in treating your pets the way you want to be treated, and at Bingo Pet Salon you have the opportunity to show your pet just how much you care. Owned by Royal Oak resident John Beasley, Bingo Pet Salon is located right in the center of Downtown Royal Oak at 108 w. Fourth Avenue. Bingo not only gives your pets the chance to be pampered, but its various services will give your pooch or cat a style all their own.
The new storefront will immediately catch your eye with the large glass window, allowing you to sneak a peep of the pooches playing and strutting their stuff inside the display area. Once inside, the decor is modern, featuring high exposed ceilings and deep cherry wood floors, giving the venue a chic lofty feel. Bingo also connects to the Royal Oak community by featuring colorful works from local artists on their walls.
As a full service spa salon, manager Kate Burton was able to quickly explain to us what makes Bingo different than traditional pet groomers. Offering a wide array of services to pamper your pet, from the groom spa to the "nailpawish", many of the services offered for pets mirror those of their human counterparts.
The drop off at Bingo is also enticing at this high-end pet salon. As opposed to having to think about what you are going to do while your pet is being serviced, being in the heart of Royal Oak has its perks. There is plenty to do from checking out a movie at Emagine Theater, to dining and even shopping right in walking distance from the salon.
For the owner on the go, Bingo also tends to your pet's needs outside of the salon offering Sit & Stay home boarding and pet sitting. Depending on the needs of your pet, a trained staff member will feed, take your pooch on a walk to the Dog Park, groom, play, complete minimal tasks around your home from taking out the trash to watering plants, and even send you photo updates on your pet via email or text all for a reasonable fee.
In addition to catering to your cat or dog, Bingo Pet Salon is also a proud sponsor of the Royal Oak Animal Shelter and New Beginnings Animal Rescue. Each week the Salon will foster adoptable pets in hopes that someone will find a good home for them, all you have to do is ask one of their friendly staff members for adoption details. There will also be a New Beginnings Giving Tree which serves as a drop off for pet food which then goes to families that need help with feeding their pets this time of year.
So in following Saturday's "Shop Local" theme, we suggest you check out the new Bingo Pet Salon and let them cater to you and your pet's needs. Your pet will feel safe and right at home as soon as they walk in.

Eats: Bella Piatti, Birmingham
Bella Piatti, Birmingham
By Ebony Nicole
Bella Piatti is the newest addition to Downtown Birmingham's dining scene and it's adding a taste of Italy to the Bistro game. The Vanhellmont's, who also own Birmingham's Tallulah Wine Bistro, have opened up Bella Piatti right across from the Townsend Hotel.
Placing an emphasis on locally grown products, and food items imported from northern Italy including wines, spices, and olive oils. This bistro adds an intimate Italian feel to bistro style dining here in Metro Detroit.
As soon as you enter Bella Piatti you can't help but notice the sophistication of the Italian themed decor. Exposed metal ceilings create a modern feel and the layout is cozy creating the perfect setting for dining, conversation, and for enjoying one of their many shareable dishes. This is what the social dining experience is all about.
So, what is social dining? The friendly staff at Bella Piatti were able to inform us of the newest dining trend to arrive in the Detroit area. Social Dining is when an atmosphere is created which encourages a group of people to come together and share their meals. The goal of this style of dining is to connect with others through food.
In addition to traditional dining tables adorned by soft lighting. Bella Piatti also has two bars to choose from. There is a bar for spirits and a charcuterie bar where you can view and dine on cold appetizers being made in front of you.
The sophistication of the decor overlaps onto the food menu as well. Chef Daniel Campbell adds his own twist to modern Italian cuisine. Everything from the appetizers to the desserts are bursting with flavor and filled with distinctive ingredients. Customers have a variety of starters to choose from, pasta dishes of a sizeable portion, and several meats to please your palate.
The drink menu is also well done featuring Italian inspired cocktails handcrafted with quality ingredients. A wine menu follows suit featuring many wines directly imported from Italy that are perfect for pairing with your meal. It should also be noted that the beer list has Italian-brewed ales and lagers as well.
If you are looking for an out of the ordinary dining experience to enjoy with others, look no further than Bella Piatti. Adding, sophistication and social dining to the Birmingham restaurant culture this is definitely a place you must see for yourself. Be sure to make a reservation as this venue has quickly turned into quite the local hotspot.

Detroit Lions, Justin Durant
Justin Durant, Detroit Lions
By Ebony Nicole for After 5 Detroit Fall 2011
The Detroit Lions are making their city proud this season with a good chance of making the playoffs. We sat down with new Lions linebacker, Justin Durant, to get his insights on the team, Detroit and life in general.
Born in Florence, South Carolina, Justin's earliest childhood memories center around football. At the age of eight. Justin started playing football and he quickly realized that he had a gift. He and his team were much more advanced and talented than the competition and they had easy wins. This was also when he won his first championship.
Justin went on to attend Hampton University in Virginia. He remembers his college years as being a great experience, during which his team won three championships in a row, and he was named the defensive player of the year three years in a row. These accolades made college especially fun and memorable.
Justin's NFL career began with the Jacksonville Jaguars, where he played from 2007-2011. Then he was recruited by the Lions. For Durant, it felt great to be recruited and he was anxious to see what it would be like to start fresh and play for a new organization.
Since he arrived in Detroit and joined the Lions he has been embraced by everyone from the players to the coaches to the fans. His transition has been smooth.
When describing the overall culture of the Lions team this year, Justin says team youthfulness is on the rise, but the team also has smart leadership and veteran players. This helps everyone stay focused and on the same page with the same goals. Their ultimate goal is the playoffs.
So how does Justin get mentally and physically prepared before a game? To prepare himself mentally, he watches the films, he studies, and he reads his notes. And then he studies some more. Justin says, "People don't see behind the scenes that we work very hard to get the results everyone sees on Sunday." The entire team gets their minds right the whole week. Justin describes the process as rigorous, and he along with his teammates prides themselves on winning the game and aiming to get better each week.
Although athletes have different routines, for Justin, the weight room, extra running drills and exercises are his main areas of focus during and after practice to get him physically prepared for the game. "The biggest thing you have to do also is take care of your body, including weekly massages and chiropractic visits to keep your body aligned and in the best possible shape for Sunday because it takes a toll after every game", says Justin.
We asked Justin about his personal goals. "It's simple", he said, "team first and do whatever it takes and is asked of me to make the team successful this season. However, within the team goals I'd like to achieve this year 100+ sacks coupled with some sacks and interceptions leading to a Pro-Bowl nod representing Detroit." It appears he is man with goals that he is dead set on achieving.
When Justin is not on the field it's no surprise that he likes to find time to relax after practice by downloading music and watching movies. Justin also enjoys interacting with fans via Twitter, tweeting about random happenings that he finds amusing or commenting on hot topics of the day.Click to follow him.
With everything happening so fast, Justin has focused everything on the season and has not really had the pleasure of going out in our great city. However, he looks forward to enjoying everything Detroit has to offer in food, music, and entertainment when he finally gets some free time, which hopefully will not be until after the Lions have won the Super Bowl.

Barrio Tacos & Tequila
Barrio Tacos & Tequila
By Ebony Nicole
There's a new eatery in Birmingham that is bringing a unique twist to your average tacos so we stopped byBarrio Tacos and Tequila for a little taste testing.
Located in the former Quattro Pizzeria and Wine bar Barrios has given this location a huge makeover. The setting is now energetic and colorful, and has a traditional modern dining area and a lively bar. Murals by the graffiti artist, Acamonchi decorate the space giving it an upbeat urban feel.
It should come as no surprise that Barrio's menu is upscale. This
restaurant specializes in traditional and contemporary Mexican themed cuisine while capturing the essence and flavors of Latin America. Along with delectable entrees, Barrio's also has a full signature drink menu, and as to be expected, offers a lot of tequila.
The name "Barrio" is Spanish for 'neighborhood' and it stands alone as Downtown Birmingham's only Mexican restaurant adding flavor to the dining and nightlife scene. Barrios offers dine-in, takeout, catering, delivery and outdoor seating for your convenience. Whether you are planning an intimate dinner or a casual gathering, Barrio is the ideal place for both.

All That Jazz! Metro Detroit's Ben Sharkey
Ben Sharkey
By Ebony Nicole
It is no secret that Metro Detroit is a hotbed of unique musical talent. This week I had the pleasure of sitting down with Ben Sharkey, a musical performance artist who has been causing quite a stir around Metro Detroit. Inspired by his own family's musical roots, Sharkey's mix of R&B, jazz, and soul is one that you ought to become familiar with.
Ben has shown a love for music all his life. Growing up Stockbridge, MI in a household where his mother sang and his Grandfather owned a live music bar in Flint, you could say that musical talent was in his blood. As a youngster Ben was constantly singing along with the radio, and playing the family piano.

As a youngster Ben was constantly singing along with the radio, and playing the family piano.
Inspired by R&B at an early age, Ben became a fan of artists like Toni Braxton, Jon B, and Stevie Wonder. Although Ben always wanted to be a musician, achieving this dream had its challenges and money was one of them. After a stint in New York, Ben, with his mother's advice, decided it made more sense to take the college route and focus on his other passion which is Art.
As soon as Ben graduated he began to take singing seriously. "It's best to do it when you're young." Young and driven Ben started to post videos of himself singing original songs and covers on YouTube and he soon became a sensation, racking up tons of hits and garnering a lot of attention. This then led to Ben being offered opportunities to perform at top venues.
The Motor City has been good to Ben. As he puts it, "Detroit is the perfect place for an up-and-coming musician to get started and make a name for themselves." One of Ben's most memorable experiences so far happened last year when he opened at the Royal Oak Music Theater for acclaimed soul superstar Robin Thicke.
Ben's describes his shows as having a jazzy vibe. "The reason I like jazz is because of the sophistication of it." Ben places an emphasis not only on the music but also on the appearance of himself and his band. Not only a jazz musician, Ben also fuses his R & B roots into his music and is a songwriter as well.
Singing classic renditions, original works and also doing jazz versions of pop songs comes naturally to Ben and it's his risk-taking and creative performance style that allows him to stand out.

Detroit's Man of Style
WILLIAM mALCOLM: "Man of style & substance"
By Ebony Nicole
"Style without substance is pointless." WM
Mixing style with substance is a mantra that local designer William Malcolm lives by. His impeccable eye for style and design has led him to start his own fashion label and, in addition, he also makes his mark by impacting the community in a big way.
William became interested in fashion in his teens after his mother expressed to him that he was not dressing
appropriately. She subscribed him to the Gentleman's Quarterly Magazine, a publication whose primary focus is men's style and trends. This sparked a fascination with fashion; he became extremely interested in impeccable style and tailoring.
It was in his teen years that he began sketching his own designs, influenced by various art forms, and he says, "Fashion when done correctly is an art form as well."
Although fashion was William's passion, like many others he chose what he perceived to be "the safe route" as far as his career goes. Prior to beginning his own fashion label he graduated from Western Michigan University and went on to build a successful career in the financial services industry. William says, "Although I was good at it I could never be great because it was not what I was called to do."
Being a student of men's fashion for many years it was only natural for William to pursue a career designing for men. Inspired by the dapper appearance and details of the 1930's and mid 20th century tailoring of suits, he set out to reinvent this classic attire and made it his mission to once again "restore the double breasted suit as an option for today's sophisticated gentleman."
In May of 2009, William's Luxe Collection of men's suits was launched. William says, "My goal when designing a bespoken suit for a client is to give him an experience." All of William's appointments are one on one, and all suits are hand-delivered unless they are ordered from out of state, in which case they are gift wrapped and shipped to the client.
To add to this experience, all suits all come accompanied with their own soundtrack, and yes, I do mean each suit is delivered with a custom music compact disc for the client to listen to while getting dressed.
In addition to fashion, William has also made his mark as a philanthropist. He believes that, "Style without substance is pointless." He has started three non-profit initiatives that directly benefit the citizens of Michigan. "The Suit Project" is his mentor program for young men. "The Man of Style & Substance Scholarship Contest," is a way to highlight young men making a contribution to our community. And "The Blue Tie Project" is a Prostate Cancer Awareness Initiative.

Detroit Nation
Detroit Nation
By Ebony Nicole
Every year hundreds of young professionals leave Detroit and move out of state. Many of these Detroit imports settle in other big cities and, although they are miles away, they still feel connected to Detroit and feel the need to respond to the negative press and be a part of the many revitalization efforts taking place in our great city.
This is what Detroit Nation is all about.
Detroit Nation was founded in 2010 in response to what founder Rachel Jacobs and a group of friends in NYC saw as a missed opportunity. They saw a need to connect former Detroiters across the country to the good news that is happening in our city and also provide ways for people to give back and stay involved with their home community. Since its inception, Detroit Nation has grown to include New York City, Chicago and L.A, and it is still growing.
So, what does it mean to be a member of Detroit Nation? Regional leader Adam Babcock of the Chicago Chapter says, "Being a member of Detroit Nation gives me a way to stay connected and give back to my home community. I have not lived in Michigan for a long time now, but I was always proud of where I came from. It was disheartening to hear all of the negative sentiments being said about Detroit. Now, as a member of Detroit Nation, I have a method of spreading the good news, and getting other people involved as well! It has been great to see how receptive people have been to the organization."
Not only is Detroit Nation effective at spreading the good news about our city throughout the nation but their efforts help several local charities and organizations as well. Sara Sefcovic of the New York City Chapter says they try their best to always have a great program lineup which keeps people involved, including the Kick for Detroit Fundraiser, the Discover the D Weekend, and an upcoming panel discussion, among many other events. Her desire to play a role in Detroit's revival is what drives her and other members to "remain engaged, involved, and committed to Detroit's success".
In addition to holding events in the cities in which they have chapter, Community Outreach is also a top priority of this group. Partnering with New Detroit this past spring, they piloted a volunteer program where they provided technical assistance - including marketing, strategy, and graphic design - to 8 community-based non-profits served by New Detroit. The organizations served by their volunteers include the Oakland Avenue Farmer's Market, Peaches and Greens, Solid Foundation, Heritage Works, Centro Multicultural la Familia and Wigs for Kids.
"Our future goals are to continue to expand our chapters and local programming, and to strengthen our volunteer program to provide connections to national resources that can help Detroit-based startup companies and non-profits continue to grow," says, co-founder Rachel Jacobs.
On October 15th, in conjunction with 'Discover the D,' Detroit Nation will work with CommunityNEXT to host a launch party for the 'Live Detroit Fund.' This is a program providing rent subsidies for 25 next-gen leaders that live in Detroit.
Making a big difference in Detroit even though they are miles away has been the aim of the vibrant young leaders of Detroit Nation since day one. Dedicated to supporting the Detroit region by directing the money, skills and energy of native Detroiters to people and organizations engaged in economic development, cultural innovation and job creation in Southeastern Michigan has proven to be a winning solution to help take our city to the next level.

Eats: Seva Detroit
Seva Detroit
By Ebony Nicole
Over the years Midtown has grown at a rapid pace, bringing a sense of big city life to Detroit through the grand openings of new restaurants like Seva.
Once upon a time if you decided to reside in Detroit you would often times have to venture out the city limits to find unique and healthy culinary delights. However, with the resurgence that is going on in the city where young professionals are choosing to live, work, and play, business owners are recognizing the demand and need to open venues of convenience in several of Detroit's thriving neighborhoods.
When the owners of Seva Ann Arbor, Jeff and Maren Jackson, decided to open up a new location in Midtown, Detroit, it was well timed. With healthy eating on the rise, along with the city on its brink of a huge turnaround, it made great sense to come downtown.
Located within the G.R. N'Namdi Gallery in Midtown and accessed from more of an alleyway than street front, you really have to know where you're going to find this new dining destination, but it still serves as a prime location in the heart of the arts district and a hotbed of other creative and unique businesses.
Upon entering Seva, you can't help but to notice its modern feel. The dining room is a soft green color and the look is industrial and lofty, filled with light pouring in from the floor to ceiling windows that serves as it's front wall. The welcoming and knowledgeable staff also gives it just the right amount of energy it needs, which helps when you may be in need of help in navigating the special ingredients on the menu or assistance deciding which specialty beverage will best compliment your meal.
If you're already a fan of Seva Ann Arbor, you will be pleased to know that the brown-bag style full vegetarian menu is mostly the same. Chef Matteo Burns has placed an emphasis on fresh ingredients for their vegetarian or vegan spin dishes, including popular favorites: Enchiladas Calabaza, Grilled Pesto Pizza Sandwich, Black Bean & Sweet Potato Quesadilla and of course, yam fries...yum! Tofu and gluten-free options are also made available in their own delicious concoctions. So no matter what your dietary needs are, the hearty dishes here are enough to satisfy any tastes...even if you are a meat eater, we still think you'll find something to leave you coming back for more.
The menu and daily food specials should certainly be enough to entice you to this casual chic setting, but we also recommend that you try the wide array of specialty beverages from the bar, offering everything from raw fruit juices to local and imported beers, wine and liquor, earning Seva the stamp of approval in both departments of food and drinks.
So whether you come out of familiarity of their Ann Arbor location or are just looking for a new dining experience in the city, the fresh and imaginative cuisine that Seva Detroit has to offer is worth your next reservation. For it's the openings of places like Seva that give new and old residents and visitors of Detroit a reason to shop and dine local.

Shane & Shawn Shoe Designers
Shane & Shawn, Shoe Designers
By Ebony Nicole
Imported from Detroit and now based in NYC, the 'Shane & Shawn' line, named after and created by the twin brother duo, is young, cool, sophisticated and like them, is sure to stand out as the best in their field.Born in Cincinnati, Ohio and raised in Detroit, the Ward twins grew up with humble beginnings, but recognizable talents early on. Both excelled in math and physics, graduating from Cass Technical High School and later from U of M, but Shane's original focus was on car design, while Shawn's was on engineering.
After college the twins pursued their separate dreams -- Shane was hired by Adidas to design shoes and Shawn started his career at Chrysler. It wasn't long before the bright lights of NYC allured Shawn to the city for stock trading, with Shane joining shortly thereafter to freelance design for different shoe companies.
With a twist of fate and the economic downtown in 2001, Shawn decided to leave the stock trading business and partner up with Shane in the shoe business to create the dynamic duo, where Shawn takes care of the business and financial components and Shane oversees the creative side and design.
Thus, it was the beginning of Shane & Shawn.
So beyond the dashing good looks of the twins behind the brand, what makes fashionistas swoon over their chic designs?
When asked what their primary goal is when designing shoes for women, Shane says, "First, they have to be hot and sexy." In addition, they make sure their shoes are trendy and current with the season's fashions. And lastly, Shane uses his background in athletic shoes to make sure even the perfect heel is comfortable for any night out on the town.
For men, a different approach is taken, as men's shoe trends don't change nearly as drastically as women's. So they concentrate on making their shoes cool, versatile and practical.
With the Fall season upon us, we asked the twins what to expect as the "it" trends to look for:
Women: Over the ankle boot cut is hot, in addition to the wedge, and exotic, two tone patterns are going to be huge. Men: Keep your eyes out for sneaker bottoms with dressy tops, natural tones and square toes.
Fortunately for you, the two decided early on to sell their shoes exclusively on-line -- so you can check out their full line of men's and women's shoes, bags, scarves, eyewear, belts & wallets, while shopping 'local' from the comfort of your own laptop.
So as another season kicks off in the fashion world, business never stops for this growing brand and business. Getting their hard working mentality from their Detroit roots, Shane and Shawn Ward stay true to their belief of working hard, perseverance, giving back...and always staying fashionable.
